Is Vertical Farming the future of Agriculture?

Growing crops vertically above each other are known as vertical farming. An emerging trend is to improve the yields in farm production by stacking plants vertically on shelves or tall pillars. They can be grown in any tall structure and increase the vegetation vertically.

The increasing population increases the demand for food, and the limited fertile land that is suitable for cultivation apparently increases the urge to come up with innovations to feed hunger and fulfil needs. Thus vertical farming helps in tackling the issue of producing large yields in confined land restrictions; as the plants are grown vertically, the vertical farms can fit large acres of farmland in building size.

What is Vertical Farming? Vertical farming is a method of growing crops vertically under controlled conditions. The concept of vertical farming came into light when Dickson Despommier and his students 1999 proposed a design of skyscrapers that could feed 50000 people; though the design never came into existence, it became popular and led to the invention of vertical farming. This type of practice is done indoors by providing the necessary environmental conditions a plant would require, and thus produced crop was no less than conventional farm products in terms of nutritional value. In fact, they had more benefits with regard to conventional farming.

Why Vertical Farming? Vertical farming helps increase farm yields within small areas because the plants are grown vertically and do not occupy much of the ground. A more extensive variety of crops could be grown in a place at once as they are grown under controlled conditions and do not share the same plots of land while growing.

Since the plants are grown indoors, they are resistant to extreme weather conditions and relieve farmers from fearing the crop getting destroyed due to extreme or unexpected weather conditions, which acts as an added advantage. The structures with vertical farming can add aesthetics to the place when well-designed that blend into the surroundings. The apparent fact is that greens around will always help in reducing the risks of global warming, and vertical farming could also contribute to that.
